Brief  History

The Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. of today is an Amalgamation of the operations of three Companies – Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. (formerly Industrial Gases Limited), Liquid Carbonic West Indies (LCWI) and Trintogas Limited (TGL). Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. was incorporated on November 21, 1935 whilst LCWI was incorporated on July 3, 1931. Both Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. and LCWI were majority owned by Foreign Shareholders, Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. by the Schwarenka Family of USA whilst LCWI was owned by Liquid Carbonic Corporation of Canada and USA.

Initially, Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. operated primarily from Aranguez, manufacturing and selling Oxygen, Nitrogen and Acetylene. Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. was also engaged in the resale of Structural Steel, Medical, Safety and Welding Equipment. In 1973, Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. commissioned the first Air Separation Plant to produce Liquid Oxygen (LOX) and Liquid Nitrogen (LIN) in the English speaking Caribbean.

LCWI initially was solely engaged in the manufacture and sale of Carbon Dioxide made for the combustion of fuel at Cocorite, Port of Spain. In 1960, LCWI became a competitor of Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. when it acquired the Oxygen and Acetylene operations of Caribbean Salvage Company Limited at Sea Lots, Port of Spain. LCWI also diversified its operations into the resale of Safety, Welding and Medical Equipment, Cathodic Protection and the distribution of Moil Oil products and Propane. In 1967, LCWI installed at Savonetta, the first Carbon Dioxide (CO2) recovery plant using a raw CO2 gas supply from Yara Trinidad Limited (formerly Federation Chemicals Limited). LCWI also exported CO2 to various Caribbean Islands, French Guiana, Aruba and Curacao.

In March 1975, Massy Group acquired a majority interest in the Joint Venture Partner Company – LCWI which is now Massy Gas Products Limited.
Since 1977, the Joint Venture Partner has changed several times. From 1995 to 1997, the Joint Venture Partner was Praxair Inc of USA, from 1997 to 2002 it was Messer Griesheim GmbH of Germany and finally Air Liquide International S.A from 2002 to 2013.
Between 1977 and 1984, Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. went through a period of rationalisation and reorganization which eventually resulted in a more efficient and centralized operations at Savonetta. The Company decided to concentrate on the Industrial Gas business and exited all non industrial gas related business activities. Over the years, the Savonetta location was upgraded and expanded to include an Air Separation Unit (ASU), Acetylene, Hydrogen and Nitrous Oxide and CO2 Recovery plants, Engineering, Sales and Administration offices.
This expansion required a focus on operating standards and product quality. In 1996, the Company attained ISO Certification under the ISO9002:2004 Standard. This certification has been maintained to the present time under the ISO9001:2008 Standard. Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. also attained ISO22000 (Food Safety Management System Certification) in 2013.
In 1995, Trintogas Limited was acquired by NMGPL and in 2008 its operations were amalgamated with Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. With this amalgamation, Massy Gas Products (Trinidad) Ltd. re-entered the Welding and Medical Supplies business.

Massy Gas Products continues to service hospitals and health facilities

Massy Gas Products is the Premier Oxygen supplier to Trinidad and the Southern Caribbean through its partnerships with key oxygen generating facilities in the country and has significant capacity to meet unexpected demand. This includes a well devised infrastructural plan with the nation’s hospitals to meet current demands based on the bed spaces available.

As a result of the current state of affairs, Massy Gas Products has been proactively procuring equipment to increase its delivery capability to meet unanticipated demand.

In addition, with the increase of COVID-19 positive cases across Trinidad and Tobago, Massy Gas Products has been engaging with all of its stakeholders including the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health Authorities to ensure oxygen availability either through liquid oxygen and/or delivery of cylinders to hospitals and health facilities.

It has noted a significant increase in demand from private individuals who are seeking to purchase medical oxygen cylinders for personal use in the case of an emergency. At this time, the organisation says it is unable to meet those demands from private individuals, but it remains committed to certifying and filling cylinders that are privately owned. We wish to reiterate we will not be entertaining the purchase of medical oxygen cylinders for personal use, but only certifying and filling cylinders where applicable.

Massy Gas Products wishes to assure the public that there is no shortage in the availability and supply of medical oxygen to medical facilities. The company urges the population to continue adhering to the protocols set by the Ministry of Health and not from unverified sources.
